Andrew Anthony FBB Chapter 2

Kristen starts off this chapter by  describing the bunnies at the 903 Pad. The 903 Pad is a 240,000 square foot area full of 3 to 5 gallon barrels full of toxic and radioactive waste. Now I find it appalling that any place can get away with storing that much waste out in the open. But anyway, Iversen says how the barrels are leaking into the soil which eventually leads to the creeks and the reservoir. She then says that there are bunnies that live in the 903 Pad, and these bunnies are being affected by the waste. She says that the bunnies show high levels of alpha radiation, particularly in their hind feet, and she says that management of Rocky Flats knows about it but isn't doing anything to help. It just shows even more that the heads of the weapons plant don't really care about what happens to the environment as long as they make their weapons. Also in the early parts of the chapter Iversen talks about everything that is going on during 1969. She talks about the Vietnam War, Woodstock, Apollo 11, and all of the protests that are going on about the war. She mentions that people start showing up outside the west gate of Rocky Flats and protest the production of the weapons. Later on in the chapter Kristen brings up her starting middle school and having to deal with stuff like fashion. How she would be wearing cowboy boots and kids would tease her for wearing them. That doesn't sound much different from how kids are treated in the public school system today. If you aren't wearing what's cool or what everyone else is wearing, you're going to get made fun of. Also in the chapter, some higher up officials outside of Rocky Flats are starting to realize that the plant is having negative effects on the environment. It's about time. But of course, Rocky Flats officials manage to cover things up and make the people believe that nothing bad is happening to the environment at all. This sure shows the idea that trust is important, and if a person or group of people don't trust you with something then you shouldn't trust them either.
