Chapter 8 FBB Consorti
The conclusion of Full Body Burden is not a hopeful one. The ominous final sentence "the granite stones grow wet and the ground turns to mud." (Iverson 340) alludes to the faulty clean up. Earlier in the chapter the radiated topsoil was discussed, and we learn that it will not be effectively cleaned. The case is overturned, and Peters life work is null. I believe the purpose of this book was to ask people to be alert. At the base level, it is about asking people to ask. While it is entirely about the dangers of radiation, and the problems Rocky Flats caused, that matter is said and done. There is not much anyone can do any more except become aware of what happened. Because there is little we can do about the situation she described, I believe she wants us to learn from it. The relation to her life serves as a vehicle for us to become emotionally involved, the facts are there so we are able to understand the lengths to which people will go to avoid blame. She simply wants us to remain alert, to question, and to avoid silence.
