As the book progresses, so does Kris’s fathers alcoholism.
He has been emitted into the hospital and his heart is failing him. Will he
come out of this healthy or pass away due to abusing alcohol? I think it’s
really sad that her father meets her children for the first time while he is in
the hospital and barely acknowledges them. Nathan and Sean may never grow up
knowing their grandpa. Kris’s father has become so bad he almost crashes into
Kris and doesn’t even realize that he could have killed his own daughter and
grandsons. How did he become so messed up?
Ironically,
Kris gets a job at Rocky Flats. Rocky Flats is now known as Rocky Flats
Environmental Technology Site. What will changing the name do for the community
surrounding it? Apparently plutonium is no longer used there but is that really
true? Kris really needs the money to pay for school and support herself and her
boys. Will she keep this job in order to make good money? I wonder, will being
in Rocky Flats everyday affect her chances of getting sick?
