In chapter six I feel like Kris is in denial. She went back to the town she grew up in and
got a job at Rocky Flats. Why is this a
bad thing? Because she specifically says
“I debate whether or not it’s safe to work there [Rocky Flats]. The money is sorely tempting, and I reason to
myself that if there is contamination out there, I’ve already been exposed to
it. After all, I grew up with it. A little more won’t hurt, will it? Most of
all, though, I want to see what it’s like inside” (245). Kristen is showing how in denial she is about
the plutonium contamination and how even if it is dangerous that it doesn’t
matter because she already has some in her.
But what about her kids? Isn’t
she worried about contaminating them?
That is what confuses me, because for as loving as she is towards her
boys, she doesn’t seem to mind having them live near a nuclear weapons
plant.
