Mike Giolli-Full Body Burdon-ch7

In this chapter it became more clear to me why Iverson wrote this book. It has been interesting up until now trying to predict what her intentions are. I knew that Rocky Flats had a huge impact on her life because she started the two parts of the stories equally. Maybe it was because of our discussion in class, but now I have a lot better understanding of why she wrote this book. Iverson says, "I want to write about the two things that have frightened me most in my life, I say. Rocky Flats, and Dad's alcoholism" (283). From the first couple of chapters, I knew that her fathers alcoholism was going to be an important subject throughout the book.
I think that Iverson wrote this book in order to spread awareness. She grew up in Rocky Flats back yard, and I believe that she feels guilty. She never paid any attention to what was going on at Rocky Flats, and simply went along with her parents laid back attitude. I think that for this reason, she feels guilty about Rocky Flats, especially after seeing all of the sick people from her community. I agree with the prediction that her sole purpose in applying for a job at Rocky Flats was to investigate from the inside. I was surprised that she quit so subtly, I thought that her curiosity would end up getting her in trouble. I think Iverson writing about her fathers alcoholism was also out of guilt. She mentioned that she travelled the world looking for things to write about. I think that when she realized that the story of her own life could be successful, she felt obligated to share this aspect of her childhood. She knows what its like to be in this situation, and thousands of kids continue to be in the same situation. Although she doesn't give any advise, or go out of her way to make people dealing with an alcoholic feel better, I think that it helps just knowing that there are others the same situation.
I am surprised at how recent the story is taking place. So much time has went by since the beginning of the story, and much of the same stuff is happening. Right now there is a fire in Rocky Flats, just like in the beginning. It seems like no matter what people try to do to make Rocky Flats more safe, the same irreversible accidents continue to occur. I wonder if Kris's health problems have something to do with Rocky Flats.
