In chapter two we start to see the people becoming more
aware of Rocky Flats and what goes on there. Bunnies around the area have
started to grow abnormally long ears and tests on them show high levels of plutonium
and nuclear radiation in the creatures. Protestors start gathering in front of
the gate and chanting about the pollution and lies coming from the plant.
Images of the Vietnam War are all over TV and are a main concern of the
American citizens, however, Kristen tells us how although aware of the chaos
going on her family is pretty much unaffected and distant from it. Farmers are
starting to worry about the effects on their livestock and rightly so the soil
testing around the Rocky Flats area shows a plutonium rate 1,500 times more
than normal. Kristen shares a look into her childhood and how she grew up, we
see her father’s alcoholism and how it affects the family. Especially after the
accident, she was really hurt in it but no one said anything because they
couldn’t admit to the drinking problem or that their father had actually really
messed up this time.
