In these pages of Parable of the Sower, things have gotten much worse but almost better. Staying alive is a lot more work on the outside than it was inside the gated community that no longer exists. Lauren has lost everyone close to her, but now she is getting an opportunity to test her knowledge and spread the ideas of her new faith.
Whats happened to Lauren’s community was terrible and the motive of the painted pyro’s is unknown. Although when Lauren goes back to her community after the fire went out she encounters a women that gives us an idea of what their motive may have been. “She died for us” a scavenger had said to Lauren while she was looking at a dead painted body. I think these painted people taking the so called fire drug are killing the people that have it better off than the majority of street poor.
After the traumatizing invasion of her community, Lauren is forced out into the streets. This is where she finds who they believe to be the only ones remaining of their small community, Harry and Zahra. They all begin to either get to know each other for the first time or start to see one another in a completely different light. Zahra had a though life on the streets as a child and shares a lot of knowledge on how to survive. She mentions the racism the three of them would come in counter with while traveling. It surprised me that in such depressing times people could still discriminate against race. The street poor were the street poor, no one had much more than the other, why does it matter what they look like?
Harry was the first to ask Lauren what she is always writing in her notebook. This is the first time Lauren discusses Earthseed anyone. As people begin to join their group the knowledge of Earthseed starts to grow. It is challenged and accepted by the group members, just like the start to any faith. When the most recent addition is made to their group one of the girls , Jill asks “who are you guys, anyway?” Harry then quickly responds with “ Earthseed”. Lauren’s dream is begging to come true, even in the desperate time she is living in. This just shows that anything is possible.
