In part three of the reading Lauren goes through many
struggling times: her father disappearing, losing her brothers and Cory, and
having to leave her community. Leaving
her community has proved to be the most difficult. Lauren does have Harry and Zahra with her to
help her move north, but even with the three of them, surviving is
difficult. As the three of them head
north they stop at stores along the way and buy necessities with the little
money that they have. They use their
bought items in hope to survive longer and to not fall behind. They know that falling behind is dangerous,
especially on the freeway in a crowd of people.
Everyone in the crowd of people is possible danger, so they’re always
keeping an out to make sure that they stay alive. The pack of three came up with a couple of
ways to ensure their safety. One way is
that they take turns during the night to sit and watch for any potential
danger. When I read that part I felt so
stupid because I never would’ve thought of something like that.
Then Lauren tells Harry and Zahra about her sharing. They’ve never heard of it before and Zahra seems very interested in it, but Harry isn’t too sure about it. I respected Lauren for being able to tell them about her sharing because not only will it help her to survive, but I’m sure that can’t be an easy thing to tell people. Lauren also told Harry and Zahra about her Earthseed book and of her poems. Even though that’s something that goes against her family’s religion and against what most people believe, she was able to tell them about it and that she truly believes in it.
As the book goes on, the pack of three run into more people on their journey north: a mixed couple and their baby that Lauren helped, an older gentleman that Lauren seemed to instantly connect with, and two girls that were trapped under a broken house after the earthquake. This group of nine is now traveling north together in the hopes of finding a better future. All together they bought better weapons and more necessities to be able to make traveling safer.

I completely agree with respecting Lauren. It was very courageous for her to share her hyperempathy and it needed to be done. It will help her and her allies because that could be a big threat to their safety. She's probably the most level-headed of the three, but her weakness could bring them all down.
ReplyDeleteHopefully now that everyone knows of her sharing powers they will be able to accommodate her more so she isn't always in extreme pain.
