Mike Giolli parables 125-244

In this section there is a major change in the direction that the story is going. In the beginning when one family moves to Olivar, the narrator feels like the time for her to leave is quickly approaching. At this point, the community is still intact. When her father disappears, all of the order in the town leaves with him. The narrator is hopeful that her father is alive until the funeral. I noticed that she is not very emotional at all, and didn't even cry once.
The way the author writes this book is interesting. Many major events that have occurred are simply mentioned at the beginning of a chapter, where in other books there will be a dramatic situation behind it. For example, when both Keith and the Father disappear, it is the beginning of a chapter and she simply says they went missing.
The Father has a symbolic role in the story that I never realized until he was gone. Before he disappeared, he was the Pastor in the community which gave him a role in leading everyone and being looked up to. After he disappears, all order is gone in the community. There is a fire in one of the houses and the number of thieves breaking in increases. Eventually the entire community catches fire and everyone is forced to leave. I think that this was good for the narrators cause because she knew that she needed to leave eventually, but couldn't find a way to leave her brothers and Cory. I also realized that the fires have a symbolic aspect to them. The pyros are the most dangerous people because they go around burning down villages and looting from houses. While the new group is travelling along the highway, people go toward fires acting like savages to get anything they can steal. I think the fire represents the greed of society in this era because wherever there is fire, there are people willing to hurt or steal from anyone for themselves.
Earthseed has grown from an idea of one person to a shared belief of multiple people. It is started to appear as though more and more people will begin to follow Earthseed. The narrator is starting to lay out plans to settle up North and begin a community of people who share her beliefs. She is turning out to be a major leader, and the group she is travelling with certainly would not have been together without her.

  2. I think you are totally right that the Lauren's father was the only thing keeping order is the community and once he was gone everything kind of just fell apart. Only I didn't realize it until you pointed it out. I also agree that it was a good thing that everything Lauren knew disappeared because it gave her what she needed to leave. I can't imagine being in her situation. It would be incredibly hard to know that you have absolutely nothing to go back to if you can't find what you are looking for on the road.
