"Summary" of Responses to Iversen's Chapter 3 (as of 8 pm 9/15)
So, everyone sounds thoroughly depressed by the book. (It won't continue to just be depressing, FYI.) You all write about being disappointed in Kris's father, and many of you say you understand the ramifications divorce has on children. In class, we should try to make parallels between Lauren's father and step-mother and Kris's father and mother. We should also continue to pursue comparing and contrasting the two books. Largely, I'm interested in what most grabs your attention: fiction or nonfiction? Which book most inspires you to work toward ensuring that your children have a "better" future, and why? Is your choice dependent on the book's genre, or is it based on writing style, race, class, and/or other concerns as they play out in the text? In class tomorrow, we'll also talk about denial and secrets and ignoring problems.
