John Zim FBB Chapter 1

After reading Kristen Iversen's first chapter of Full Body Burden, I was shocked by the normality of confusion amongst the people of Rocky Flats, in regard to the nuclear power plant. The majority of Rocky Flats, including the plant's employees, is unsure as to what the plant actually does. The area seems to be engulfed in pollution and radiation. The leaking of plutonium into the earth's atmosphere has directly been related to the death of the narrator's childhood companion, which, to me, signifies the beginning to a reign of havoc brought on by the pollution of plutonium. I also feel that the regularity of fires occurring in Rocky Flats is a foreshadowing of greater devastation in the later pages of Full Body Burden. In addition, I wondered why a relatively young family would move into this unsafe environment by choice. Whatever their true reasoning was, I am interested to find out what will happen to the Rocky Flats community due to the harsh environmental living conditions.

  1. Making a good choice requires good information. All of the families were constantly being reassured how 'safe' it was.

Remember, in those days we trusted our government a lot more than we do today. Also, because of the Soviet threat hanging over our heads, the term 'national security' protected a lot of information, some of it necessary and some not.
