Full Body Burden Chapter 2

Iversen’s tricky setting and plot structure are finally starting to seem logical and weave together in an interesting manner.  The relationship between the description of Kris’s childhood and the straight facts of Rocky Flats’ shady existence makes reading a non-fiction novel bearable.

A part of this story appeals to me emotionally.  After connecting the fire at Rocky Flats with radiation, it is devastating to read about all the animals and children who are being affected by the radiation.  It would be different if they had a choice of living there, but their fate all lies in the decisions their parent’s make.

A reoccurring theme of ignorance is portrayed so far throughout the story.  On multiple accounts characters ignore serious issues that will progressively get worse if ignored.  For example, the children and their instinct to not talk about their father’s alcoholic ways.  The surrounding cities ignorance of the Rocky Flats’ fire and newspaper reports.  Additionally, the employee’s ignorance of the truth about Rocky Flats.  It is a shame to witness pure stupidity like this throughout such a horrific situation.

  1. I agree that the way she brings together her personal life and the story of Rocky Flats does make this story easier to read. Glad you're enjoying the book.
