Final chapter Rebeca Gold

After everything thats gone wrong with Rocky Flats, why the court decided to revoke the case is mind boggling. Do they not see how much damage Rocky Flats has done? From people getting sick constantly and having tumors and cancers, to not even being able to swim in the lake. Iversen talks about how her brother's dog is not able to swim in the lake and how the patrol man says, "You can ski in the middle of the lake, or you and your dogs can swim in the middle of the lake, but you can't wade in or kick up any sediment" (304). This shows how much has been impacted by Rocky Flats. People are not even able to let their dog swim in the lake unless it is in the middle of it because of plutonium that can get in. The lake water is used for drinking water and is restricting people from enjoying normal, everyday luxuries. This makes it even harder to believe that the court took back the case.
Also, I thought it was a huge turning point in Kris' life when her dad called her and told her he wanted to meet for coffee. The way the memoir describes him now then how he was in the beginning of the memoir was indescribable. Kris describes him as "his hair uncut, gray and very straight and a little too long, reaching past his collar. He wears a corduroy shirt the color of rust, well-made but worn, perhaps bought at a second hang store. The shirt is rumpled and covered with lint... His skin is pale and thin as paper, sagging a bit under his jaw" (309-310). This description compared to the one in the beginning is extremely different. He was a well put together, hard worker, and now he just seems like a low life slob. However, I do think Kris seeing her father was something she really needed in her life to finally have some closure on Rocky Flats, and with her family problems. At the end she finally makes it evident that she is finally ready to move on to the next chapter of her life and she feels like she can end on the note that she did.

  1. I totally agree that it was mind boggling the case was revoked. I was hoping in the end, Peter would win and Rocky Flats would be closed down forever and people would be reimbursed with money. I thought it was a huge part in the memoir when Kris and her father reconnect too. I agree that she really needed to rekindle her relationship with her father.
