chapter 2 Nicole Cassell

To me it seems crazy to be a house wife, with a drunk husband that I'm afraid to talk to. The 70s are not so far behind us and yet times were a lot different. As a woman now i could never let myself become unemployed and completely reliant on my husband as Kris’s mother is. I would have gotten myself a job and a divorce a long time ago if i was her.

It bothers me that everyone is being so oblivious to the heath effects of Rocky Flats. Several test have shown evidence of Rock Flats giving off toxic waist that is making its way into the drinking water and soil. How can people not be concerned? I get the feeling that the adults in Kris’s neighborhood are trying to live the perfect AMerican life that they was taken from them in their childhood, do to the great depression. They are in denial, much like the community from Parable of the Sower. Rocky Flats means good paying jobs for a lot of people, why try to shut it down right?

  1. Nicole,
Really wise comments. I think you're spot on with your analysis that the American Dream might keep people trapped living unhappy lives (just to keep up pretenses). And I love your comparison between Lauren's community in Parable of the Sower and Kristen's community in Full Body Burden.
