Parable of the Sower 196-End
The last section of the book has left many questions and statements in my mind. The most interesting events were Lauren and Bankole’s relationship, and Lauren’s determination to build the Earthseed Community.
Although very unusual, the relationship of Lauren and Bankole seems legitimate. Bankole’s characteristics are very fitting and complimentary in contrast with Lauren’s. She is very determined and driven while he is laid-back and easy-going. While they both know what they want, their personalities helped teach other endure the long journey they traveled. A man older than her father, somehow attracts Lauren, which not only frightens me but makes me question what kind of life Octavia Butler lived in order for her to think of something like this to write?
The best thing about reading this book is seeing the perseverance that exists in Lauren. Throughout the entire book as a whole Lauren serves as a light of hope. Her whole family and community dies and she still has that determination burning in her. Earthseed is Lauren’s idea of a safe-haven because in her mind it’s one thing that will always be there. She believes in change and overall, people dread change. However; change is inevitable and the Earthseed Community is Lauren’s way of overcoming change. Symbolizing hope for readers in whatever situational change life may bring.
