It seems that Lauren’s prediction of their world falling apart, that everyone saw as so silly is becoming a reality. People are dying, and more and more robbers are making their way through the gates. All this is leading to people in their community leaving to live somewhere els, somewhere more safe.
When Lauren’s brother Keith begins running away and stealing from the family, things really start to fall apart. It made me angry that Cory was letting Keith get away with so much, and almost supporting his cruel behavior. Keith wanted so badly to be older that he put himself and his entire community in danger, yet Cory let this escalate by letting his bad behavior go throughout his childhood. As much as she blames her husband and even Lauren, or the fact that Lauren is her fathers “favorite”, it seems to me she partially blames herself for his death. Although she has yet to admit this, I believe she knows that babying him made him less of a man, no matter his age.
Olivar is now another option for many people. it is described as a safe place for people to make money and be supplied with food and water without worries of being robbed. The people that are afraid and do not want to face their miserable reality will believe that Olivar is where they need to be. The foolish people will give up their freedom to for safety. I think that Olivar will become more of a slave town, as Lauren’s father describes it. He says “ Freedom is dangerous, Cory, but it’s precious, too”. I love that line, it shows us readers how important his old life is to him. He would rather be faced with danger every day than give up his and his family’s freedom. Will Olivar be the future? I cannot wait to find out.
I really like your attitude, Nicole. In the last paragraph, you state that you think Olivar will be a slave town, yet it appears you are keeping an open mind with the sentence, "I cannot wait to find out."
