Jacob Brown Parable of the Sower 85-125

In this part of the text Lauren's family dynamic goes through some very abrupt changes. At the beginning of the book Lauren's family seemed to be one of the few stable things in her world that lent her great support. She had an overt love and respect for her father even though she did not always agree with him and her relationship with her step mother seemed excellent. However, when her younger brother Keith sneaks outside the wall, which results in a beating from his father, the entire family is put into a state of tension. This results in Keith leaving the community several other times and eventually for good which results in severely strained relationships between Cory, Lauren's Stepmother, and Lauren's Father. Lauren's own relationship with Cory also becomes harsh. Keith's eventual death was the last straw for Cory who goes into a state of perpetual grieving. Lauren didn't like her brother Keith to much but she still was horrified by his tragic death. After Keith death the worst thing possible happened to the fragile and wounded Olamina  family. Lauren's father goes missing for days and is presumed by many to be dead. Lauren's family, which was once a source for strength, is crumbling to pieces.
Another major event taking place at this time is the sudden reduction of the community. Many of Lauren's Neighbors have decided or are contemplating moving to Olivar. Olivar is a privately owned town who's residents are working for the city's company owners. The demise of Lauren's community is not happening the way she envisioned but is happening nonetheless. Lauren close friend Joanne is one of the many who have decided to move to Olivar. Lauren and her father are among the few who don't believe the safety is worth essentially selling themselves to the company. This community disintegration may cause Lauren to expedite her plans to bring Earthseed to the outside world.

  1. I agree with your interpretation regarding the change in Lauren's family dynamic. I too felt that tension arose following Keith's departure. The stability of Lauren's family is severely weakening, and, as you put it, "crumbling to pieces."
