Parable of the Sower (2-85)

Octavia E. Butler's, Parable of the Sower, is a compelling and gripping fiction novel that depicts the struggles that come with poverty as well as the necessary means needed to be taken in order to survive those struggles. The setting takes place in a violent and highly dangerous California in 2025. Throughout the first eighty three pages we learn a great deal about the main character and the voice of the novel, Lauren, and her family. We are made aware of the economic turmoil the country is in, as well as the daily struggles each person in Laruen's guarded town has to go through in order to remain safe. The town in which Laruen lives has nearly reverted back to a life common in the country's early years, in that women are getting pregnant at a young age, energy is scarce, so electricity is limited, and the outside world is violent.
I have found Butler's, Parable of the Sower, to be very interesting and extremely eye opening. Each page offers a level of excitement and intrigue. I am drawn to the way the character's handle themselves in each situation. Butler uses a great deal of vivid detail and paints a distinct image for every event that happens in Lauren's life. I am very much looking forward to continuing my reading of Parable of the Sower, and I am anxious to see where Butler takes Lauren and her family in the pages to come.
